Two former Nebraska City brokers who improperly sold risky investments in several interrelated Florida companies are now facing criminal charges of securities fraud. Rebecca Engle and former Nebraska football player Brian Schuster are now facing charges from the Nebraska attorney general’s office. This new development in the case means the two are now facing eight counts of securities fraud. At least three lawsuits have been filed in state and federal courts against Engle, her former employers, Schuster and other brokers who worked with Engle. The lawsuits allege that more than 130 investors were defrauded out of more than $20 million.

Scot Davis will be the new Hayward school principal. Davis comes to Nebraska City from Gage County were he served as the principal at Tri-County high school. That school, located just south of DeWitt Nebraska has been operating under the looming threat of consolidation with Wilber for several years now. In a February 9th board meeting at Tri County Public Schools a 2009-2010 Elementary Principal’s Contract with Mr. Scot Davis was voted to be posponed. Jail Inmates Will Use Lincoln Hospital

Bryan LGH in Lincoln Nebraska, not St. Mary’s Community Hospital in Nebraska City, has been selected for the care of jail inmates. This is after the hospital hit Otoe County with a $61,708 bill for said services. Some patients will likely require immediate care at St. Mary’s Community Hospital to be stabilized prior to being sent to Lincoln. Last year, Otoe County paid a total of $12,421 for inmate medical expenses. Since July of this year, the price tag has already risen to $37,222.

Please Prepare for Wind

Yesterday the NWS issued a wind advisory for our part of Nebraska. As usual, a drive though town included dodging around resident’s trash bins that had blown into the streets and alleyways. A neighbor reported to me that she found a half completed credit card application in her yard from a resident over a block down the street. The point here is to remind residents to prepare for the wind by securing trash bins. Besides keeping Nebraska City clean; it may also help with your own security. We have some clever tips and ideas from the Dept. of Energy on how to keep your trash from blowing away.

Junk Refrigerators and Old Mattresses

story iconToday Thrifty Treasures in downtown Nebraska City apparently had another sidewalk sale. In the picture you can see the old refrigerators and bed parts on display right in front of their store. We have been unable to confirm the city granted them a permit to conduct a sidewalk sale for Saturday, February 7th, 2009. Without a permit, said sidewalk sale is certainly a violation. Beyond that, do locals want to see old bed parts and junk refrigerators on display in downtown Nebraska City? Our sympathies for their plight with city officials have officially expired. See the pictures for yourself and tell us what you think.

Local Church Provides Aid as Nebraska Economy Weakens

The recession has been late to hit Nebraska, and even the overly optimistic Gov. Heineman admits it will be, “A deeper and longer slowdown than any of us would like.” With so many out of work these days, it is especially important that there is hope for the needy when community leaders, not government, give to those in need. Louisville Church Pastor Cathy Stander deserves recognition for excellence as a community organizer. Her church collected and donated 17,720 pounds of food and hygiene supplies to needy families in neighboring Cass County.

A Good Man Back on the Job

Looking back to an Otoe County Commissioner meeting on October 14th, Commissioner Nicki Kreifels moved to rehire Lynn Denniston, one of the Otoe County workers terminated prior to Dale Haverty’s recall. That was for a position as assistant to Roads Superintendent Glen Steffensmeier. Under the new County Commissioner régime experienced bridge crew foreman Lynn Denniston is back on the job. Tuesday the commissioners voted 4-1 in favor of his rehire. There are a number of good reasons why Denniston belongs back at his old job rather than being an assistant to Steffensmeier…

Unprecedented Crowd at Presidential Inauguration

Unless you’ve been in a coma, you know Barack Obama was sworn in today as 44th US president. He is the nation’s first black president making the occasion historic. Analysts believe anywhere between 800,000 and 3 million people swarmed on Washington D.C. to be part of the inauguration. On his way out of office, President Bush used his power to pardon to commute the sentences of U.S. Border Patrol agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean. They had been sentenced to 12 years for wounding a drug smuggler in 2005.

Obama, the Pepsi President

Pepsi has a new product logo. The logo is a change that Pepsi drinkers must believe in. However, some are saying the new Pepsi logo looks very close to the Obama presidential campaign logo. Not only that, Pepsi’s new advertising campaign is startlingly similar to that of Obama’s. From the advertisements to the logo itself, Pepsi seems to be sucking on someone’s success. Is Pepsi riding the Obama wave and are they alone in borrowing from one of the most successful pieces of marking in our time?

New Nebraska Law Aimed at Drunk Drivers

Nebraska joins five other states this week in enacting a new law aimed at motorists convicted of driving drunk. Those drivers will be required to have a breathalyzer ignition lock installed in their automobile. The system will prevent engines from starting until drivers blow into the breathalyzer confirming they’re sober. The law was mandated as the result of a nationwide campaign by Mothers Against Drunk Driving.
